The story
Toki-iro is a color with an extinction story: the Japanese crested ibis, whose wing-linings flash this pink at take-off, was hunted to a single wild population by the 20th century. The last Japanese-born wild toki died in 2003; the color name survives as a record of a sky Japan almost lost — and of the reintroduced flocks now testing it again over Sado.
