Ruri entered Japanese through Buddhist scripture — the Medicine Buddha's paradise is 'pure lapis' — and the color kept that celestial register: temple ornaments, votive glass, and the prized ruri glaze of imported porcelain. Edo glassmakers called their deepest cobalt ware ruri, selling the heavens by the cup.
