The story
Shu is apotropaic: gates, lacquer, and the vermilion seal-ink (shuniku) that still validates contracts all borrow its ancient association with warding off evil. The shogunate licensed foreign trade with 'vermilion-seal ships' (shuinsen) — the color itself was the signature of state authority.
