In the layered-robe code of the Heian court, colors were calendar entries: wearing sakura outside its brief season was a faux pas noted in diaries of the time. In The Tale of Genji's famous robe-distribution scene, Genji picks a sakura layered gown for the little Akashi princess — a costume choice every reader then could date to the week.
