Kachi — beaten (from the pounding of cloth) — sounds identical to 'victory,' so samurai wore kachi-iro under armor as a walking pun of good omen. Banners and armor lacings in near-black indigo carried the wordplay into battle; centuries later, fans like to hear an echo of the same pun in the Japan national football team's 'Samurai Blue.'
