The story

Fuji carried a clan inside it: the Fujiwara, whose name means 'wisteria field,' dominated the Heian court, and wisteria banquets under hanging blossoms were their private theater of power. In the layered-robe calendar fuji marked the turn from spring to summer; in family crests it still marks descent from the great house.
